April 27, 2010 - Q & A with DACA National Teamer and UCLA Bruin Laurence Delisle
Congratulations to DACA National Team Swimmer Laurence Delisle on the completion of her first college season with the UCLA Bruins! As a freshman, Laurence qualified for and competed at the NCAA Championship. She has taken the time to reflect on her first year in and out of the pool at UCLA. What was the biggest difference for you between high school/club and college swimming?
The biggest difference for me between DACA swimming and UCLA swimming was the availability of resources. Because I am at an elite division 1 university there are trainers available at all hours of the day to take care of the athletes and anything that may be troubling us. I have been very fortunate to have these resources; not all colleges do. This allowed me to take care of my injuries as soon as they happened and speed the healing process immensely.
What has been the biggest challenge in your first year as a college student-athlete?
The biggest challenge was getting used to a new coach. Over my four years with Pete we have developed our own unique relationship and we understand each other. However, this took four years to develop. By changing coaches, I had to adapt to a new regime and a new coaching style. Cyndi, the head coach, and Erika, the assistant coach at UCLA, offer different perspectives on the sport as well as reinforce what I have heard before. It is hard for anyone to join a new program with brand new coaches. But, since the first day, I have loved my new coaches and our relationship is becoming stronger and stronger every day.
Congratulations on qualifying for your first NCAA Championship. What was the most exciting part of your NCAA Championship experience?
It was an honor to attend NCAA as a freshman for UCLA. It was my goal to make it to NCAA as a freshman and I was so excited when it became reality. NCAA was an amazing experience...and hard to describe in words. I have never been to a meet in which there was so much excitement, teamwork, passion, and love for swimming. The parents in the stands were going crazy and the hotel rooms and doors were full of decorations showing each school's pride in their athletes. I think the most exciting part for me was getting my pass to get onto the pool deck (even though that sounds funny!). It was then that it became reality: I made it to NCAA. Plus, they even had each person's name on their pass and their picture! How cool is that? :)
How do you feel that your years with DACA prepared you for the next step in your swimming career, as an NCAA Student-Athlete?
DACA could not have prepared me any better for my NCAA swimming career. Under the watchful eyes of all DACA coaches I developed into the swimmer I am today. Pete always told us: Swim fast on demand. I always remember this when I swim. It doesn't matter how you feel at swim practice or at school; you need to be present wherever you are and make the right decisions.: you need to give 110%, no less, or you shouldn't be there. This is the attitude of all elite institutions and the attitude of champions. Each set has a purpose whether you know it or not. It is up to you to decide if you are going to get everything out of it or not. This attitude has allowed me to be great in and out of the water.
Off the pooldeck, what has been your favorite part of life at UCLA? Any favorite classes? College life is amazing! It is weird to not have classes at specific times each day like high school and to be able to schedule class around your swimming schedule rather than vice versa. School has been challenging but extremely interesting. Because I am not sure yet what I want to major in I have been taking many classes that I am interested in. So far, my favorite class has been German 59 in which I learned about the Holocaust, its history, and the present consequences of it. It was extremely interesting and sad at the same time. Rather than spending one day on it as I did in high school I spent an entire 10 weeks learning about it in such great depth that I was amazed that I didn't know the facts before.
After qualifying for NCAA's as a freshman, what are you most looking forward to as a sophomore?
I am looking forward to meeting the new freshman class and seeing the team's dynamic with them. I can't wait to develop further as a swimmer and make top 8 at NCAA. This coming season should be even better than the last for the Bruin swimmers. We had so many individuals who barely missed making NCAA which was a bummer but only shows how much stronger we can be next year. It will be a great year and I can't wait!
February 16, 2010 - Q & A with DACA National Team Member Chelsea Fong Congratulations to DACA National Teamer Chelsea Fong on her recent decision to attend Rice University as a member of the Lady Owls Swimming & Diving Team. Chelsea has taken the time to share her thoughts on her college selection and her many years with DACA.
What was most important to you when making your college choice, and how did Rice stand out?
Chelsea: All of the colleges that I was considering had outstanding swim programs, as well as impressive academics. I wanted to attend a school that would provide me with a great education as well as an awesome swim team and program. Rice stood out to me because it had all of that and more.
You have been with DACA for your entire swimming career. What is your favorite DACA memory?
Chelsea: I wouldn't be able to pinpoint one specific DACA memory because I have enjoyed everything about training here with DACA. I am so lucky to be a part of a team that provides its swimmers with experienced and caring coaches as well as opportunities to race and challenge myself every day in practice. I think most of my favorite memories are from travel trips with the team. It's always fun to travel with your friends and then compete with them in a new pool or area.
How has your experience with DACA supported your desire to compete at the NCAA level?
Chelsea: DACA has truly supported my desire to swim in college because it has blessed me with the opportunities to race at that kind of level. DACA has been very supportive of my personal goals as a swimmer and I've been able to continue reaching these goals because of everything DACA has provided for me.
What did you find to be the most fun and most stressful aspects of the college recruiting process?
Chelsea: The college recruiting process is stressful only because deciding where you want to spend the next four years (or more) of your life is a really hard decision. It is also a hard decision when colleges all have something different to offer. But the recruiting trips, when I got to go visit the colleges, and spend time with the team, were the best. I had a great time getting to know all of the teams I visited and bonding with the coaches. I don't know how I would have made my decision without those trips.
What excites you the most about starting with Rice?
Chelsea: Well they just built a brand new 50 meter pool outdoors which is really exciting for me because I won't have to adjust to an indoor pool, and I can keep my tan :) I'm also really excited to meet my fellow freshman teammates and get to know the other girls on the team. I'm looking forward to everything about next year.
What advice do you have for any young DACA Swimmers with college swimming aspirations?
Chelsea: If you really want to continue swimming in college, continue to develop your strokes and work hard at every practice. I think that staying focused when you are in the pool during practice is very important, but so is the fact that we love the sport. It makes it even easier to reach your goals and set even higher ones when you enjoy what you are doing. The friends that you make and the relationships you build with your coaches will be equally important to your success. So stay focused, but make sure you have fun too! January 15, 2010 - Q & A with DACA National Teamer Shayne Fleming
Congratulations to National Team Swimmer Shayne Fleming on his recent committment to attend and swim for the University of California-Berkley! He has taken the time to share insight on his college decision, as well as his time with DACA and his recent trip abroad to compete with the United States National Youth Team in Stockholm and Berlin.
You recently competed with the United States National Youth Team in Berlin and Stockholm. What was the highlight of the trip for you?
Shayne: The whole trip was great. I would have to say it would be between competing against the fastest European’s in the world, or being on a team surrounded by incredibly fast people my age.
Moving forward, how do you feel that this international experience will influence your swimming career?
Shayne:I’ve noticed that I have a lot more confidence when I step up to the block next to a big name swimmer, which is really good for the future. I swam next to the 50 meter freestyle World Record holder (at the time), Frederick Bousquet, three times during the trip. And each time I was able to think about my own race instead of him. This was a great improvement from last summer when I first raced him. He was all I was thinking about then. This confidence will help me know in the future that any big name swimmer is just another swimmer and I’m going to do my best to beat that swimmer each time I race him.
How have your years with the DACA program prepared you for international competition?
Shayne: DACA has prepared me for international competition by allowing me to go out and race quite often back here in the USA. I have been given a wonderful opportunity to swim fast and race the big name swimmers from the U.S. All of the meets that I have been to have helped me be that much more ready for the international meets.
Congratulations on your recent college commitment. What was it about Cal that really stood out to you?
Shayne: Thank you! Academically Cal has great business and engineering programs, which is great because I am definitely a math guy. Also I have a really great connection with the Coaches, Dave Durden and Greg Meehan. On top of all of this, I could tell that the team was a close group and I definitely wanted to be a part of that.
What was your favorite part of the college recruiting process?
Shayne:I loved listening and learning from ALL of the coaches of the schools I was looking at. Whether that be on the phone or in person, I could listen to these coaches sharing their knowledge about swimming for hours. They are all great people.
What advice do you have for young DACA Swimmers with NCAA and international aspirations?
Shayne: Trust your coaches and work hard. Your coaches have a purpose for everything they are having you do, and they have put a lot of thought into why they want you to do each set. So work hard and go fast every time they ask it of you. (And even when they don’t ask for it, work hard and go fast!!) December 8, 2009 - DACA Winter Holiday Break

November 19 , 2008 - Q&A with National Team Swimmer and Future UCLA Bruin Laurence Delisle
Congratulations to National Team Swimmer Laurence Delisle, who will be attending UCLA in the fall as a member of the Women's Swimming Program. She has taken the time to give us some insight on her college decision and time here at DACA. Congratulations to Laurence and best of luck at UCLA, DACA is very proud!
What was it about UCLA that really stood out to you?
Laurence: The great academics and the superb athletics at UCLA had everything I was looking for in a school. Not only could I succeed in the pool but in the classroom as well. It wasn't until I actually visited UCLA that I realized how much they had to offer. Getting to know Cyndi (the head coach) and Erika (the assistant coach) showed me that I would be seen as not only an athlete but a human as well. The support base for athletes at UCLA was phenomenal. Never before had I seen a school that wanted their athletes to succeed in both walks of life.
What was your favorite part of the college selection process?
Laurence: I must admit that although the process was stressful, I felt so blessed to have the opportunity to visit five amazing schools. My favorite part about the college selection process was stepping off the plane when I arrived at each college knowing that I was so fortunate to have such an amazing opportunity. I was surprised to see that, although there were similarities between all of the colleges, each had several unique attributes that I would have never known about without the trips.
How has DACA supported you in your NCAA aspiration?
Laurence:
DACA has always supported me throughout my journey as an age group swimmer a high school swimmer, and now as a college bound athlete. When I had shoulder surgery at the age of 12 my coach Tammy was there to guide me through my difficult times and showed me how to race hard even when you can't move your arms. More recently, with my wrist surgery, my coach Pete taught me to believe in myself and reach for the stars. His confidence in my athleticism drove me to seek new heights and to not be afraid. The atmosphere at DACA and the team support we get from the younger athletes and parents makes each step of the way worth it; the strive for excellence is seen everyday in every group. It feels like just yesterday when I was looking at the National group in awe wishing that one day, I might be as fast as them!
What advice do you have for young DACA swimmers that hope to someday swim in college?
Laurence: Follow your dreams. If you listen and respect your coach, try hard, and have fun, nothing will come in your way of swimming in college. Even when you have a setback, use that opportunity to become better at a new area. If you can't use your arms make your underwater dolphin kick that much better. If you can't kick, work on your stroke so that you have a perfect technique. Natalie Coughlin wasn't born with great underwater dolphin kicks - she worked hard to seek perfection. Find that way to be that much better than your opponent while still enjoying every moment in the water.

June 24 , 2008 - Q & A With the DACA Olympic Trials Qualifiers!
Four Swimmers will be representing DACA at the US Olympic Swimming Team Trials, coming up June 29 - July 6, 2008 in Omaha, Nebraska. Maddy Schaefer (50 Freestyle), Ashley Vrieze (100 backstroke), Danielle Gong (200 IM), and Shayne Fleming (50 Freestyle) each took the time to share their thoughts on qualifying for Olympic Trials and DACA's role in helping them achieve their goals. Congratulations to each of our qualifiers and best of luck in Omaha! GO DACA!
How did it feel when you made the "Q" time for trials?
Maddy: The night before I made the cut, I swam the 50 free in finals. I missed the cut by .01 seconds. The cut is 26.39 and I went 26.40. I was so upset that night because I really thought I was going to make it then. I talked to Pete and we made a plan to try one more time during the 200 free. I would swim it as a split for the first 50 and then do the 150 easy. So I swam the 50 split. I looked up and when I saw my time I was so HAPPY! I was in shock. I was so excited I could barely finish the 150 easy. When I got out of the pool, all of my friends from DACA were standing there ready to give me a hug! :-)
Ashley: The feeling was so surreal. I had missed the cut multiple times and once I achieved it, I couldn't believe it was true. I still think it is surreal that I will be competing at Olympic Trials. I am so thankful that everything finally came together for that one race. I had trained so hard and the feeling of looking up at the clock and seeing my time was unbelievable.
Danielle: I was ecstatic when I found out that I got my cut. I still remember, I got it a year ago in Irvine. Before my race, Pete told me to go for it and I was a little unsure if I could get it. When I touched the wall, I saw that I had gotten it. It was also a relief to get it because it was a goal of mine to get it.
Shayne:
When I finished the race and achieved the cut in the 50, time stopped for a little bit. Time came back when I heard my Teammates congratulating me from the side of the pool and it was all smiles from there.
How has DACA supported your Olympic Trial aspirations?
Maddy:
Pete has always been very encouraging and from the very beginning he understood that I have very high goals. He supports me completely. I am so glad he is my coach. My teammates also encourage me, too. Every day in practice, we all try to help one another to be the best that we can be.
Ashley: DACA has supported my Olympic Trial aspirations by supporting and believing in me 100%. I couldn't have been able to achieve the qualifying time without the support of my swimmers and their parents, my teammates, my co-workers, and most of all my coach(Pete). DACA is an amazing club program. It gives swimmers so many opportunities to be the best swimmer and person they can be.
Danielle: DACA is and has been extremely supportive of my Olympic Trial aspirations. DACA has a really strong support group that includes knowledgeable coaches at all levels and who are willing to do anything to help you succeed. DACA has high standards and a strong work ethic, which is expected from a young age
Shayne:
The gift of being able to train on Daca has been a blessing ever since I started. It is impossible to say any coach I have had has not helped me. I am grateful for the chances to travel so far in order to get faster competition and my best swims. Daca has been a wonderful help ever since I joined the club 7 years ago.
